'Police Awareness Fund' Scammer Targeting Palos: Police

Watch out for scammers using the police to get you to donate.

Watch out for callers claiming to be from the "Police Awareness Fund." It's a scam.

Palos Park police are warning residents about this latest scam. A man who said he is from the Palos Awareness Fund and the Palos Park Police Association has been calling area resident. The caller offers a decal to supporters who donate money.

Both the Palos Awareness Fund and the Palos Park Police Association are fictitious organizations. The Palos Park Police Foundation is a real organization that assist the department but does not solicit through phone calls.

The scam calls are coming from the phone number 217-303-8800.

Police want residents to be carefull when they make monetary donations or contributions over the phone, as it is not the safest way to show your support.

They called our house last night, but we were on to them already. Be careful, they are very forceful and convincing. Who can we report this to and go after these scammers??

Call Palos Park Police's non-emergency number and let them know. (708) 448-2191

Does the Palos Hills Police Dept. have a foundation that solicits donations over the phone? Several weeks ago we received a call and were told to just tape a check to the front door (which we did). I think we did the same thing last year. Is this legit?
