Palos Park Police Debut First Virtual Ride-Along This Weekend

Palos Park Police Department embraces social media.

For the first time, residents can ride along on local patrols without leaving comfort of their own homes, when Palos Park police roll out the first Twitter-Ride-Along this weekend.

From 6 p.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday, Officer Chibe will be tweeting throughout his patrol shift. Residents will get a real-time view of a night on the beat in Palos Park and be engaged in the stuffing going on -- from pulling out-of-town municipal officials out of ditches to traffic stops and chasing perps.

“Virtual ride-alongs are an extension of our social media outreach, whether it be Twitter or Facebook,” Palos Park Police Chief Joe Miller said. “Many departments are active on Twitter and our goal is to have a number of social media-trained officers tweet during their shifts once a month from our Twitter account.”

The Palos Park Police Department already has a Twitter account with 415 followers. Twitter allows the community members to follow events, natural disasters and police activity. Residents following the department’s Twitter page will be alerted by email or text messages when police update their site, in addition to the police's eAlerts.

Twitter will also allow the police department to keep community members posted about events and street closures before they happen. Police can also Tweet from crime scenes.

“When new information is coming out every second, it will be easier to send this information out,” Police Commissioner Dan Polk said.
