Palos Park Police Blotter: Beware of the Scam, Pot Arrest

Palos Park police reports, June 15 - 20.

FRIDAY, JUNE 15

Attempted Mail Scam

A Palos Park resident told police that she received a letter saying she had won a "USA Mega Sweepstakes." The letter included a check for $4,669 that she was instructed to deposit it into her bank account, police said. After she deposited the check the letter claimed that she was then required to forward $3,950 as a processing fee. The woman called the number provided and spoke with someone who has what is described in the report as a "South American accent."

She alerted police who then called the number as well. Once the officer identified himself the supposed sweepstakes operator responded with, "You're kidding, right?"
