Palos Park Man Shot in Chest, Killed in Robbery in Chicago

Herbert Goode, 66, died Saturday evening.

A Palos Park man and owner of a custom framing gallery on the Gold Coast was killed Saturday afternoon, during what appears to be a robbery.

Herbert Goode, 66, owner of Silver Cloud Galleries, 20 W. Ohio St., Chicago, was shot in the chest about 2 p.m. in the 2300 block of W. 57th Street, Chicago Police said. He was pronounced dead a short time later at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Goode was described as a "jack of all trades and animal lover," as well as donor and volunteer to animal welfare organizations. He was active in local school boards and the Boy Scouts of America.

Son Alex Goode told the Chicago Tribune that Herbert grew up in Larchmont, N.Y., and traveled around the country before settling in Chicago. He worked as a cabbie in New York “for a minute,” and was an avid longtime art dealer.

“He was kind of one of those Swiss Army knives, where he knew something about everything,” Alex told the Tribune.

Goode loved animals and had a heart for taking in strays—including a kitten he recently found abandoned at his factory, according to the report.

Goode is survived by his wife of almost 30 years, Karen. His ashes will be spread at Hinsdale Animal Cemetery and in South Dakota’s Bear Butte State Park—where the avid motorcyclist trekked every year.

Police are investigating. No arrests had been made as of Sunday night, Sun-Times Media reports.

"He touched a lot of lives,” Goode, 26, told the Tribune of his slain father. “It’s a blow to the community.”
