Horse Euthanized after Labor Day Weekend Crash

A horse had to be put down after it bucked its rider and ran into traffic in rural Palos Hills.

A horse named Stella had to be euthanized after it ran into traffic and was struck by an SUV on Saturday.

The crash happened at about 9:30 a.m. in the 9800 block of Kean Avenue in rural , police said. A girl who had been riding Stella was bucked off when the horse become agitated by biting horse flies.

The 14-year-old horse then took off without a rider toward the road. A 2012 Chevy Traverse traveling on Kean collided with the animal. The driver wasn't injured and no tickets were issued.

Stella was taken to the University of Illinois in Champaign for emergency treatment but had to be put down.

"We’ve never had anything like this happen before. It’s tragic," said Pat Orr, who runs Rustic Woods Stables.

Orr said the rider was not hurt.
