Teens Charged in Palos Township Beating Deaths Ordered to Submit DNA

Each one was brought in separately, and each time the judge had the same thing to say. 

The four teens charged in the brutal beating deaths of John and Maria Granat, of Palos Townsip, appeared in court today. Judge Peter Felice ordered Christopher Wyma, 17, of Bridgeview, Mohammad Salahat, 17, of Chicago Ridge, and Ehab Qasem, 19, of Hickory Hills, to submit to DNA swabs.

The trio was indicted by a grand jury last week. 

Prosecutors say the three teens worked with John Granat 17, to kill his parents and steal about $35,000 from their home near Palos Park on Sept. 11. The couple was beaten with baseball bats and Maria Granat was stabbed 20 times, prosecutors said.

Granat, appeared in a different court room and was not asked to provide a DNA sample, his attorney Rick Beuke said. 

All four teens are set to be arraigned on Nov. 17.

Wyma was the only one who spoke during Monday's hearings. He asked the judge to allow him to transfer into a program at the jail that would allow him to attend school classes. All four .

Beuke contends that Granat's three friends plotted the murders themselves. He said he believes the case may involve additional people.   

"We will find out who, if anyone else might be charged," Beuke said.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office still classifies the case as an open investigation and have indicated that they believe there were classmates with knowledge of the crimes that failed to come forward.

After the hearings, the attorney for Mohammad Salahat claimed his client could have been the third victim.
