Former Palos Heights Official Charged with Theft

James Dougherty turned himself into police and is scheduled to appear in court this October.

, the former City of Palos Heights building commissioner fired from his job earlier this month, has been charged with theft.

Dougherty is accused of collecting $600 in payment for fines and permit fees on July 25 but not turning the money in or issuing a receipt to the business owner, said.

“We are disappointed that someone who was put in a position of trust within our city would betray that trust," said Palos Heights Mayor Robert Straz. "We immediately asked the police to investigate once this was brought to our attention. We will not tolerate this sort of behavior in our great city.”

Dougherty turned himself in to the Palos Height Police Department, officials said. He was charged, released on $1,500 bond and given a court date of Oct. 23 in Bridgeview Courthouse.
