Fire Breaks Out Behind Palos Heights Jewel

There were no injuries in a fire that left Jewel Osco evacuated Tuesday afternoon.

A fire broke out behind the Palos Heights Jewel Osco, 7127 W. 127th Street, Tuesday afternoon causing the store to be evacuated, but resulting in no injuries. 

The fire started just after 3:30 p.m. when workers were using a high lift behind the building, Deputy Police Chief Bill Czajkowski said.

A power line caught fire causing the ground to shake, fire officials said.

Because of the nature of the fire, ComEd had to be called to the scene. The fire was on the outer back wall of the building in the southwest corner. A new Jewel Osco is being constructed just feet behind the current building.

That building is expected to be .

No one was injured in the fire. Employees lined the parking lot after being evacuated. The building remains closed as of 4:45 p.m.

The Palos Heights Fire Protection District led the response and crews and equipment from North Palos, Palos and Oak Forest also responded.

A similar incident occurred when construction on the new building began last year and construction crews hit a line. 

Some fire equipment and staff remains on the scene, but the fire was quickly extinguished.
