School Year Ends with Flurry of Activites at Palos 118

Palos School District 118 was busy over the past two weeks with end of year field trips, programs, and celebrations.

Palos School District 118 was busy over the past two weeks with end of year field trips, programs, and celebrations, highlighted by Palos South Middle School’s graduation ceremony June 5 at . 

“This was a great group of students who excelled throughout their time at Palos South,” said Principal Chris Bingen, “We are incredibly proud of this group and look forward to watching them succeed in high school and beyond.”   graduating class of 217 students had 120 Presidential Academic Fitness Award winners, and 97 National Junior Honor Society members. 

The commencement ceremony was both poignant and concise, lasting just under an hour. Salutatorian Alexia Maldonado, and Valedictorian Lauren DeAngelis addressed the crowd with touching speeches reflecting on their time at Palos 118.  The Cardinal Concert Band conducted by Bill Hansen, performed “Pomp and Circumstance,” and graduating band members played “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay.

Weather cooperated with mild temperatures and abundant sunshine for outdoor parties and activities held at Palos East and West schools.  Fifth graders in Mr. Hrymak’s class were even able to go outdoors to shoot a video on weather for their science unit, while fourth graders worked in the school garden and planted rocks they had painted in class.

East was a flurry of activity, especially on Tuesday.  Students had an award ceremony recognizing student achievement, a fifth grade dance, and outdoor parties all packed into one school day.

Superintendent Joseph Dubec said, “Teachers, staff, and many dedicated parent volunteers helped make this both a successful and memorable school year.”
