Summer Camp Director

Location: Palos Heights Parks and Recreation Department

Status: Seasonal May-August

Pay Rate: $12-$14 per hour depending on qualification

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS – EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE

  1. Experience in supervising staff and experience in working in a camp setting
  2. Knowledge and ability to plan, organize, promote, and evaluate the Summer Camp Program.
  3. The ability to supervise and maintain effective working relationships with the staff.
  4. The ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  5. The ability to lead and individually work to accomplish camp goals.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Assist Program Supervisor in overall planning of the Summer Camp Program and maintains open communication with the Program Supervisor.
  2. Organizes, confirms, and conducts all field trips.
  3. Assist Program Supervisor through interviews process and hiring of camp counselors.
  4. Attends and participates in training for the Director Position and the training of the camp counselors. Responsible for motivating staff.
  5. Maintain good relations with parents, campers and staff. Always is visible during check-in and check-out to help parents and campers.
  6. Supervision of campers and counselors during all activities.
  7. Develops effective written program plans, including games, crafts, field trips, and special events for Summer Camp Program in consultation with the camp counselors. Camp counselors are expected to assist with developing program plans.
  8. Assure that equipment and facilities are safely and properly prepared and maintained for use by program participants and staff. Arrange for broken and unsafe equipment and facilities to be repaired. Report all damaged or lost equipment to Program Supervisor.
  9. Evaluate camp counselors and jointly develop improvement plans when necessary.
  10. Write and distribute weekly camp newsletter.
  11. Assists Program Supervisor in the planning and running of weekly staff meetings and in-service training
  12. Accept responsibility, make decisions, and maintain good relations with the community and staff members

 

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

  1. Some college education preferred
  2. A working knowledge of computers with Microsoft office knowledge is required.
  3. Any equivalent combination of experience and education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with this position and its essential job functions may be considered.
