Palos to perform surgery using EndoWrist Stapler

New da Vinci surgical tool more precise than the human hand

Palos Community Hospital is the first facility in Illinois to acquire the new da Vinci EndoWrist Stapler to aid surgeons during advanced robotic-assisted procedures.

“We are pleased to be one of a select few hospitals in the country to offer surgery using this tool,” says Thomas Vasdekas, M.D., F.A.C.S., a general surgeon at Palos. “It is not only a step forward in technology, but we feel patients will benefit from better clinical outcomes.”

Modeled after the human wrist, EndoWrist instruments offer surgeons an even greater range of motion than the human hand. Similar to human tendons, the internal cables of the EndoWrist instruments provide maximum responsiveness, allowing rapid and precise suturing, dissection and tissue manipulation.

The EndoWrist Stapler will be used at Palos for bowel resection, gastrectomy and appendectomy procedures. Other robotic-assisted procedures are gynecological, including hysterectomy; and urological, including prostatectomy and nephrectomy.

The da Vinci Si High Definition Surgical Robot makes it possible for surgeons to work in confined spaces in the body and perform an entire open procedure through smaller incisions, significantly shortening the length of stay for a patient and reducing recovery time by as much as 50 percent. Patients also experience less scarring and a lower risk for complications.

“This is true microsurgery. It’s so precise and a much finer surgery,” says Dr. Vasdekas, who also is a member of the Clinical Robotic Surgery Association. “With robotics at Palos Community Hospital, you see advanced surgical technique available at the community hospital level.”
