Palos Offers Minimally Invasive Treatment for Back Pain

Join Dr. Anis Mekhail to learn about back pain and the conservative and surgical treatment options from 6 to 7 p.m. Wed., Aug. 29, at Palos Health & Fitness Center, 15430 West Ave., Orland Park.

Back pain is estimated to affect 80 to 90 percent of the population at some point during a person’s lifetime. For most, it is a temporary event with a short duration. However, for some, it is a more severe or long-term issue that requires physician evaluation and treatment. “Back pain is second only to the common cold as the primary reason that patients seek healthcare,” explains board-certified Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon, Anis Mekhail, M.D.

Many patients who seek treatment for back pain describe a feeling of being overwhelmed. Treatment options are plentiful, and in many cases, the physician will give the patient a variety of choices.

Dr. Mekhail reminds patients that surgery is recommended when conservative (non-surgical) treatment has failed to relieve the symptoms and the physician feels that surgical intervention may help to alleviate the pain. “Surgery should be comprehensive enough to treat the cause of the pain, but minimally invasive in an effort to lessen the pain and scarring and speed recovery post-operatively,” Dr. Mekhail says.
