Palos Community Hospital to host Diabetes Fair 2013

Make plans now to attend Palos Community Hospital’s annual Diabetes Fair. This year's theme is "The Diabetes and Thyroid Connection."

The free event, 8:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2 at Palos Health & Fitness Center, 15430 West Ave., Orland Park, will be filled with valuable information.

When you have one autoimmune disorder, your risk for developing a second increases. And patients with either diabetes or thyroid disease may be predisposed to develop the other condition.

Join Endocrinologist Jennifer Zander, M.D., as she discusses the connection for thyroid disorders and diabetes, the health implications associated with the conditions and treatment options available.

A variety of vendors will be on hand to provide information on products for managing diabetes and its symptoms.

Diabetes Support Group

Coping with diabetes can be frustrating, regardless if you're newly diagnosed or have had diabetes for years. Diabetes requires lifestyle changes that can often seem unfair or too difficult to make.

Understanding there are others who face those same feelings and talking about them is the purpose behind Palos Community Hospital's Diabetes Support Group. You'll be able to share feelings and concerns and get tips on effective management methods to keep your diabetes under control.
Open to all individuals with diabetes, their friends and family members. This free program meets at 7 p.m. the first Monday of each month.

Your Diabetes Game Plan

Palos Community Hospital's nationally recognized Diabetes Program provides education in the self-management of diabetes. Your Diabetes Game Plan will give an overview of diabetes and the self-management skills it takes to confidently manage your diabetes on a day-to-day basis. Through it you will learn:

  • The different types of diabetes
  • How to recognize the signs and symptoms of uncontrolled diabetes
  • To identify the complications of diabetes
  • The importance of blood-glucose monitoring
  • How food affects blood-glucose levels and the importance of nutritional balance
  • How exercise impacts blood glucose
  • How various oral diabetes medications work
  • The importance of proper foot care
  • To cope with your feelings about diabetes
  • To find help through local support groups
