Palos Community Hospital Named one of the Nation’s Top 1% of Hospitals in 2013

Eight years of superior and sustained clinical quality excellence and patient care helps Palos Community Hospital achieve a place on Healthgrades prestigious America's 50 Best Hospital list.

Palos Community Hospital has been named one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for 2013 as measured by Healthgrades, the leading online resource that helps consumers search, evaluate, compare and connect with physician and hospitals. Healthgrades evaluated nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide – reviewing and analyzing clinical performance across 27 common procedures and diagnoses – to determine the nation’s best performing hospitals based on objective measures of clinical quality.

According to Healthgrades, to be recognized with this distinction, hospitals must have had risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates that were among the lowest 5% in the nation for a minimum of seven years. This is the second year that Palos Community Hospital has achieved this designation by delivering consistently superior clinical performance in the Chicago-Joliet-Naperville, IL area. Palos Community was one of five award recipients out of 14 eligible hospitals to earn a spot on this list.

“This recognition is an honor for Palos Community Hospital and affirms the dedication and commitment of our staff in assuring that all of our patients are treated with the same quality, competence, compassion and dignity as we would want one of our own family members to be treated,” says Sister Margaret Wright, president. “Our commitment to providing quality care is steadfast. As a result, we are able to provide health care services that are now recognized as among the best in the country, and we will continue to do so for years to come.”

In addition to demonstrating consistency of quality across many clinical areas Palos Community Hospital performed particularly well in the treatment of Valve Repair/Replacement Surgery. Among the 29 hospitals that were evaluated for the treatment of Valve Repair/Replacement Surgery in the Chicago-Joliet-Naperville, IL area, there was wide variation in hospital performance as measured by risk adjusted mortality rates (from 1.1% on the low end to 12.5% on the high end).  Palos Community Hospital is among the hospitals with the lowest risk-adjusted mortality rates providing patients in the Chicago-Joliet-Naperville, IL area with a measurably better quality of care.

“Today, consumers have unprecedented access to information on hospital performance as it relates to the treatment of specific conditions and procedures enabling them to make more informed decisions about who to see and where to go for care,” said Evan Marks, EVP Informatics and Strategy. “Achieving this recognition as an America’s 50 Best hospital requires a steadfast commitment to quality that has been demonstrated year after year.  This designation should provide enhanced confidence to consumers who are choosing among hospitals for those that provide consistent, measurable high quality of care.”
