Palos Among HealthGrades America's 100 Best Hospitals for Several Specialties

Palos Community Hospital’s dedication to providing quality health care has earned it an elite place among HealthGrades America’s 100 Best Hospitals. The distinction places Palos in the top 5 percent nationally and earns them 5-star designations in six different specialties:

  • Cardiac Care
  • Cardiac Surgery
  • Coronary Intervention
  • Pulmonary Care
  • Gastrointestinal Care and
  • General Surgery.

Palos also ranks No. 1 in Illinois for overall Cardiac Care, Cardiac Surgery, Coronary Interventional Procedures and Cardiology Services.

The findings are part of American Hospital Quality Outcomes 2013: HealthGrades Report to the Nation, which evaluates the performance of approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide across nearly 30 of the most common conditions and procedures from 2009 through 2011.

“This recognition is an honor for Palos Community Hospital and affirms the dedication and commitment of our staff in assuring that all of our patients are treated with the same quality, competence, compassion and dignity as we would want one of our own family members to be treated,” says Sister Margaret Wright, president. “Our commitment to providing quality care is steadfast. As a result, we are able to provide health care services that are now recognized as among the best in the country, and we will continue to do so for years to come.”

Patients treated in hospitals receiving 5 stars had, on average, a 75 percent lower risk of dying and a 61 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication than in 1-star hospitals. Additionally, approximately 183,534 in-hospital complications could potentially have been avoided and 235,378 lives could have been saved if all hospitals performed at a 5-star level. According to the HealthGrades study, the risk of death is 58 percent lower at hospitals receiving 5 stars versus other hospitals.

HealthGrades independently evaluates hospitals based on Medicare data that hospitals submit to the federal government. No hospital can opt in or out of being measured, and no hospital pays to be measured. Mortality and complication rates are risk-adjusted, which takes into account each hospital’s unique population, including demographics and severity of illness.
