St. Al's 8th grade girls complete an impressive run

The 8th grade girls from St. Al’s ended their grammar schools basketball careers on a high note.  Both 8th grade teams won their respective divisions of the South Side Catholic tournament.  Coach Murrihy’s team beat a very talented team from MHR while Coach Glennon’s girls beat St. Barnabas for the first Gold Ball for St. Al’s. Both teams played one of their best all-around games of the season during the championship games at Mother McAuley.  That great day was impressive but not a surprise given what these girls have accomplished over their St. Al’s careers.  The two teams have combined for an unprecedented 32 championships over the 5 years they have played for St. Al’s.  Highlights include 8 regular season first place finishes in SSBL, 3 regular season first place finishes in SSCL, 6 SSBL tournament championships, 4 SSCL tournament championships,  3 Incarnation tournament championships, and 3 Mother McAuley tournament championships.  This is truly a special group of girls that have shown a tremendous amount of determination and dedication on the court and during practice.   The best part was these teams have really supported each over the years and neither relied on 1 or 2 stars to win games.   In any given game, a different girl stepped up and provided an offensive spark or a key defensive play.  One of the girls said it best when they commented, “we went to the basketball evaluations as relative strangers in 4th grade and exited as best friends and a family as 8th graders”.  Parents, grandparents, and friends have enjoyed watching these girls play over the years and look forward to watching them play in high school.

The girls: Maddie Brennan, Ally Corcoran, Anna Djikas, Lauren Dytrych, Emma Fisher, Maddie Glennon, Emily Marx, Annie McKenna, Jesse McMahon, Abby Munro, Molly Murrihy, Molly O’Leary, Sam Reidy, Abby Rosynek, Jaime Ryan, Eileen Somers, and Moira Touhy.  These girls have gotten tremendous coaching over the years from coaches Mike Ahern,  Bridget Brennan, Bob Dytrych, Mike Glennon, Tom Murrihy, Mike O’Leary, Bret Rosynek, Brian Reidy, Jim Ryan, and Ed Touhy.
