More than 80 eager job searchers attended the first Moraine Valley Community College “Career Paths and Coffee” speaker series on March 10 to hear presenter Siggy Letheby, regional recruitment coordinator for the Department of Labor, talk about “Tips for the Mature Job Seeker.” Letheby gave a summary of tips, techniques and strategies for adults on finding jobs, how the workplace has changed, and how job searching has changed. He also tapped the audience in to resources for the job hunt.
A majority of people in the audience were job searching, whether they were looking to switch from a current job to another, were unemployed or underemployed, but all were interested in moving forward in a career.
“Through our free speaker series and our information sessions we’re trying to help the community grow and improve their future career prospects,” said Peggy Heenan, Moraine Valley Admissions recruiter.
The speaker series will continue with another session on Saturday, August 4, with guest Richard Oberbruner, an inspirational speaker who studied improv at The Second City Theater and uses those techniques in his presentations.
“Career Paths and Coffee” adult sessions are where people can learn about how to become an adult student at Moraine Valley. Whether it’s been years since someone has stepped in a classroom or is looking to improve job skills or change careers, there’s no time like the present to join other adults and discover what’s possible in the future at this free event.
The hour-long adult information session is the first step for adults to learn about programs and resources at Moraine Valley in a relaxed setting. This is an opportunity to get a sense of the college scene before committing to coursework. Staff will discuss hot careers to pursue, where the jobs are and what programs can help students get there.
Upcoming sessions in Building S on the main campus, 9000 W. College Pkwy in Palos Hills, are May 9, June 13 and July 18 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Moraine Valley also is offering sessions July 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the college’s Education Center at Blue Island, 12940 S. Western Ave.; and May 10 and July 19 at 6 p.m. in the college’s Southwest Education Center, 17900 S. 94th Ave. in Tinley Park.
