New Social Media Tool: Tumblr

For this new online portfolio, we chose Tumblr.

Tumblr (often styled tumblr.) is a platform that allows users to post text, images, videos, links, quotes and audio to their blog. Tumblr’s emphasis on ease of use has helped it to establish a huge user base with a broad user demographic. Tumblr is currently one of the most popular sites online and has recently reached a billion page views. With 15,000 new users signing up everyday, and two million posts published a day, Tumblr is giving sites like WordPress and BlogSpot a run for their money.

In creating our new Tumblr blog we found that the customizable appearances made it easy to integrate with our other new branding efforts. Tumblr also makes it simple to integrate across other social media platforms. The site gives you the option to cross post to other blogs, social networking sites, or video sites. There is also an interesting re-blogging feature that allows followers to re-blog your posts on their own Tumblr account, which credits back to your business page.

Another enticing aspect of Tumblr is the ability to micro-blog. While long posts are still found on Tumblr, users have the option to post a short quote or incorporate a video. The ability to create content that is composed of more than one type of media encourages creativity and allows users to create a more eye-catching page. Creating a Tumblr page could be a good idea for your business if you already have a blog. You may want to use Tumblr as more of a playground to post more informal topics.
