Procession Honoring Fallen Texas Plant Responder Passes Through Palos

The Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday for 33-year-old Kevin Sanders, a Palos Hills native and former Plainfield resident who was killed in the West, Texas plant explosion.

Kevin Sanders was honored Wednesday following a Mass of Christian Burial held at Sacred Heart Church in Palos Hills, with a large procession of police and firefighters.

A line of motorcycles, squad cars, fire engines and other emergency vehicles traveled west on 111th Street from the church and on to Plainfield Township Cemetery.

“He died doing what he loved to do by serving and protecting others and will be forever remembered as a hero,” according to the obituary for Sanders.

A native of Palos Hills and former Plainfield resident, Sanders was among the first responders killed in an explosion as they battled a fire at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas, near Waco on April 18. Sanders served as a volunteer firefighter with the Bruceville-Eddy Fire Department in Texas.
