Athlete of the Week: Stagg's Kopinski a State Standout

Chargers' tennis star again finishes in the top four in state, something no other boys player from the Southland has done.

In 2010, Kopinski drew New Trier's Robert Stineman as his opponent in the state championship match, and Stineman beat Kopinski for the title.

This year, Kopinski and Stineman connected again, this time in the state semifinals. Stineman got past Kopinski again, 6-0 and 6-1, on his way to his second state title. Kopinski then played for third place against Jason Brown of Deerfield, with Brown winning a hard-fought match, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Kopinski's overall record in 2011 was 27-4. He is the first boys tennis player from the Southland to finish in the top four in state in consecutive years.

In recognition of his accomplishments, Kopinski is the Patch’s Athlete of the Week. Kopinksi will be the subject of Tuesday's Gimme 5, right here on Patch.
