Stagg teacher attends military history seminar
Stagg High School Social Studies teacher Jennifer Baniewicz attended a history seminar supported by the Gilder-Lehrman Institute. The Gilder-Lehrman Institute is a nationally respected history organization dedicated to improving history education. The organization funds at least 12 different summer seminars across the nation, covering a wide variety of topics.
After submitting an application and essay, Baniewicz was selected to attend the seminar about modern American military history. This class was taught by Dr. Adrian Lewis, a full time professor at the University of Kansas. He retired from the military after serving almost 20 years in the Army.
The week-long seminar was attended by 20 teachers from across the nation. It was held at the Pritzker Military Library in Chicago. Baniewicz walked away from the seminar with a wealth of knowledge about military strategy, foreign affairs and a deeper understanding for the military’s role in shaping government policy. One highlight of the seminar was meeting and talking to Donald Casey, a WWII B-17 navigator who was shot down over Germany and was a POW for over a year.

Baniewicz hopes to attend more Gilder-Lehrman seminars and bring that knowledge back to her students at Stagg High School.
