D230 approves 3 administrative hires in light of retirements

The High School District 230 School Board approved three administrative hires in light of the retirements of key leaders at the end of this school year.

Wheaton named Assistant Superintendent for HR

Dr. Julia Wheaton was approved as Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources as Liz Johnson retires following 37 years of service to the district.

“The School Board looks forward to working with Dr. Wheaton in her new role,” said School Board President Rick Nogal. “She is a proven educational leader who will guide the human resources needs of the district and provide counsel to the board with great expertise.”

“Dr. Wheaton’s passion for doing what is best for students and her abilities as a critical thinker and problem solver have been an incredible asset for the Sandburg community,” said Superintendent Dr. James M. Gay. “Her interactions with administrators, staff, students, parents and community are highlighted by her belief in collaboration and teamwork. These attributes will serve the entire District 230 community well as she moves to the administration center.”

“Mrs. Johnson has fostered a culture of mutual respect among staff members with an emphasis on serving the needs of our students throughout her tenure in the district,” said Dr. Gay. “Her leadership, passion and commitment will certainly be missed as she moves on to the next chapter in her life.”

Dr. Wheaton has served Sandburg High School as Principal since the 2012-13 school year and was Associate Principal for three years prior. Before joining the Sandburg High School administrative team, Dr. Wheaton was Principal of Mokena Junior High School, Director of Student Services for Mokena District 159 and served as an administrator and psychologist for the Lincoln-Way Area Special Education Joint Agreement District 843.

Dr. Wheaton holds a PhD in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Loyola University, a Master of Arts in Educational Administration from Governors State University, a Master of Science in School Psychology from Illinois State University and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Illinois State University.

 

Dwyer named Athletic Director of Andrew High School

The School Board also approved Mike Dwyer as Athletic Director at Andrew High School upon the retirement of Rich Piatchek following 16 years of service for the T-Bolts.

"We have been blessed with an Athletic Director who over the past two decades who has been viewed as a leader and resource throughout the State of Illinois,” said Principal Robert Nolting. “Rich Piatchek has been a leader in the development of sports like bowling, competitive dance, and cheerleading at the state level and Andrew has been a marquee venue for IHSA for years due to his ability to organize and run top notch events.  I have confidence that Mike Dwyer will maintain that leadership while making important changes to move our athletic programs forward.  This includes an emphasis on program development within the high school programs, improving our presence with middle school and community-based programs and building leadership opportunities for student-athletes.  Mike distinguished himself through the interview process as having a vision to move Andrew athletics from good to great."

Mr. Dwyer has served the Andrew High School community since 1998 as a social studies teacher, assistant athletic director and coach. He has coached varsity football and boys track and field for 16 years, serving the last eight as the offensive coordinator and head boys track coach since 2005.  Among the accomplishments of the athletes he has coached is the State Champion 4 x 200 relay team in 2003, more than 25 state qualifiers and nine State medalists in track and field, eight conference champion and 11 State playoff football teams, and several athletes who have continued in their sport on scholarship at the college level.

Mr. Dwyer holds a Master of Arts Degree in Curriculum Design from Governors State University and a Master of Arts Degree in Educational Leadership from Concordia University. He also earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Exercise Science from North Central College while playing defensive back for four years under Hall of Fame coach Bill Mach.

 

Treasure named Athletic Director of Stagg High School

The School Board also approved Terry Treasure as Athletic Director at Stagg High School upon the retirement of Bob Fabrizio following 21 years of service for the Chargers.

“It has been an honor for the students, staff, and administration at Stagg High School to work with Bob Fabrizio over the past 21 years,” said Principal Eric Olsen. “Bob has been coaching student athletes in the south suburbs since 1974 and is one of the most well respected individuals in Illinois high school athletics.  As Bob closes out his tremendous career, we welcome Terry Treasure back home to Stagg High School where he began his career in District 230.  Terry comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and experience in athletics and administration.  He has worked closely with colleagues in the SWSC for a number of years and is well respected by administration across the conference.  His diverse experience, passion for high school athletics and commitment to the development of young men and women in high school will be an asset for the entire Stagg community.”

Mr. Treasure has served District 230 students over the past 20 years as Assistant Principal for Athletics and Activities, Dean of Students and coach at Sandburg and physical education teacher and coach at Stagg High School. Among the teams and athletes he coached are three state qualifying football teams (two at Stagg and one Elite 8 team at Sandburg), two IHSA regional championship baseball teams at Stagg, numerous division one college athletes in football, baseball and wrestling, a professional player in baseball and an IHSA state champion wrestler from Stagg. Prior to joining District 230 he served as physical education teacher, athletic director and coach at Conrady Junior High School.

Mr. Treasure holds a Master of Arts Degree in Educational Administration from Governors State University and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He played football at Georgetown College on a scholarship before transferring to the University of Illinois.
