Super Subs: Who Makes The Best Subs?

This week, Patch sought out the best subs in the Evergreen Park, Oak Lawn and Palos area for our ongoing series "Chowdown Showdown."

Welcome to “Chowdown Showdown,” a weekly feature where we take one type of food and ask readers to nominate their favorite restaurants in Evergreen Park, Oak Lawn and Palos. This week’s food in focus was sub sandwiches. We tallied the votes on each respective Patch site and Facebook page.

We discovered a somewhat small pool of candidates in our towns. It appears the sub market has been inundated with corporate chains.

 - Oak Lawn

Palos Patch: This was a true Italian sub with some high quality ingredients. The red pepper added nice flavor and the fresh mozzarella was a great touch. This took a traditional sub sandwich and gave it a kick of Italian sophistication. 5 Stars

Oak Lawn Patch: This was a superior sub by all accounts. The veggies were nicely oiled without being overwhelmingly greasy. I loved the meat choices, particularly the prosciutto. 4 Stars

Evergreen Park Patch: This traditional Italian sub really hit the spot. A spicy kick topped off the fine selection of meats. Although it was light on the peppers, it was a nice take on an old classic. 4 Stars

Palos Patch: received some nominations, but it was Peppo's that was chosen as the Palos representative, and for good reason. Their sandwiches come with the famous "guts" which is a mix of vegetables and a homemade dressing. The bread was fresh and managed to hold in all the tasty goodness. Peppo's has been serving up subs to Palos Hills since 1975 and their loyal customer base keeps coming back for more. 5 Stars

Oak Lawn Patch: This was a true Italian cold sub that I could imagine Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra chowing down on between shooting scenes in Ocean's 11. I loved the roast beef, salami, turkey and cubed cucumbers. Great "guts," as they say in sub parlance. 5 Stars

Evergreen Park Patch: This was by far my favorite. Other than the fact that roast beef and turkey are my favorite lunchmeats, the vinegar and oil dressing was not too greasy. An ample helping of cold chopped veggies and a little spice truly made this sandwich. 5 Stars

Palos Patch: This sandwich was a perfectly good traditional sub. With a variety of meat and bread that couldn't be fresher it stood up to the other contenders. 4 Stars

Oak Lawn Patch: Great traditional sub. I liked the ham and genoa salami, plus the thin slices of provolone. Nicely spiced and oiled. Too much mustard. I prefer putting on my oil but a nice sandwich nevertheless. 4 Stars

Evergreen Park Patch: Giving us a nice take on the classic sub, Calabria Imports was the only sub shop recommended in town. Pretty good for a still . The sandwich had bologna on it, which was not my favorite, but was still a nicely wrapped package. Calabria is known throughout town for their homemade chips, which was a nice touch to this meal. 4 Stars

And the winner is  . . . Peppo's of Palos Hills. These guys gave a modern spin on a classic sub and added their own signature touch. The combination of meats and veggies was perfect and proved to be a hit.
