Palos Gears Up For Big Sidewalk Sale

An annual tradition will get a new component when local businesses set up shop around the Palos Heights gazebo this Saturday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Sidewalk Sale has been a tradition for years, one that went along perfectly with the characteristics of Palos Height's Harlem Avenue business district. This year organizers are adding a new component to drum up excitement around the local business community.

What used to be a simple sidewalk sale where retailers could display there best deals has grown into an event that more fully showcases the diverse business community in the Palos area.

Steve Georgiou, owner of , is organizing this year's event for the Palos Area Chamber of Commerce. He says that the changing nature of the businesses that call Harlem Avenue home and an increase in empty storefronts were reasons to rethink the event.

"I wanted something in a centralized location where we could do something to get everyone involved and tap into areas where people are already out," Georgiou said.

This Saturday, July 14, over 20 businesses will have tables around the and residents are encouraged to come out and take part in the fun and pick up some giveaways along the way.

The regular sidewalk sale will take place at participating retailers from Thursday, June 12 to Saturday, June 14. The new event is meant to cap off the sale and get residents excited about local business.

The event, which runs from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., will feature food vendors, karaoke, dancing and plenty of games and activities for the kids.

A special t-shirt will also be offered. The shirt features local businesses and will be updated each year. You can buy one for $5, and included will be a $5 off coupon for local shops and restaurants.

Georgiou has been impressed with the active business community in Palos since setting up shop here several years ago.

"I can't even tell you how much business I get from people I meet through the chamber," he said.

He hopes residents come out to get a taste of what their town has to offer.

Editor's Note: Palos Patch will have a table at the event on Saturday. Stop by, say hello and pick up some free Patch gifts.
