Limestone City Grill All About Eclectic Atmosphere, Affordable Prices and Friendly Faces

Limestone prides itself on a comfortable, affordable experience that is both upscale and friendly.

Kristie Jeanes was not a stranger to working at bars and restaurants when opened eight years ago. She had already worked in her share of establishments in Chicago, but still felt a draw to the Southside.

When her father, developed the Westgate Shopping Center the original plans included a restaurant. When the original restaurant backed out before opening, her father asked her if she was interested in opening and running a restaurant in the shopping center. She left the northside of Chicago and headed back to the Southland.

“It was originally going to be a sort of upscale sports bar, but we got a chef and ended up opening more of an upscale American restaurant,” said Jeanes from the behind the Limestone bar last week. “The atmosphere is very eclectic but also warm and inviting – like you're in a living room.”

The atmosphere is not all that's eclectic, she said the bar has live music three nights a week currently playing hits from Motown, the '70s, '80s and '90s. She said the crowd ranges from 30- and 40-somethings during dinner and nightclub hours to much older and younger crowds for the lunch rush.

“The staff brings a young, energetic and happy feeling with them too – everyone here has a tattoo or something fun about them and customer service is number one for all of us,” Jeanes said.

Aside from her experience in the industry, Jeanes also brought a knowledge of the Southland with her back to Palos Heights. Raised in Palos Park and a graduate of Carl Sandburg High School, Jeanes knows the area and the people.

“I love my customers and the area and I'm in touch with what people want and like,” Jeanes said. “Sometimes it's not always what I like, but it's about the customer. I think if someone from the Northside came down here they would be out of touch.”

Limestone is on their third chef now and she said the most recent menu change was a direct result of the recession, and features the addition of more comfort food and value driven dishes – but with the same high quality.

“We hand pick all of our ingredients and have many different vendors because we try and find the highest quality for the best price,” she said. “It is hard to eat out these days, with these items and prices we find people will go out a few nights a week instead of not at all.”

Good prices can be found on drinks too, and Jeanes said there is a selection of $5 wines on the menu so that people don't have feel like they are splurging if they want to enjoy a Merlot or Zinfandel with dinner.

“It's a good selection of house wines and I do look for some more affordable ones too – but it has to be something that I think I can drink [that's not just less expensive, but still good],” she said.

Like so many owners in town, Jeanes said they felt a squeeze from the recession, adapted their business model, and now things are going well.

“I need a job, people here like me, we are keeping the door open – it's really going great,” she said.

Jeanes is looking into expanding some of the entertainment, possibly to six nights a week and also revamping the menu with gluten free items – as she herself eats gluten free.

“We are still working out those menu items but even now, if you have any food allergy or special circumstance our chef will come out of the kitchen and speak with you to see what he can – he is very accommodating.”

The kitchen is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Friday and dinner on the weekend. The bar closes around midnight during the week, but is open until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. On weekends the kitchen also stays open until 10:30 p.m. with the full menu available.

Private parties for weddings, showers and birthdays are also available by request and the restaurant has partnered with their neighbor , for funeral lunches. Limestone also has a large capacity beer garden in the back that can hold close to 60 people.
