Giving Credit Where It's Due: Palos' Small Businesses

In honor of Small Business Saturday and Thanksgiving, Patch asks: Which local shops and services are you most thankful for?

Whether's it's a hot cup of coffee before getting on the train in the morning, a fantastic massage or a dry cleaner who always manages to resurrect your favorite suit, there are products and services in almost everyone's routine that make life in Palos a little better.

To honor Small Business Saturday (Nov. 26) and Thanksgiving, Patch is asking you to post the products, businesses and practitioners in the Palos area that you couldn't live without.

Is it breakfast at Royalberry Waffle House? A burger from Joe Daniel's? A great haircut at Salon L? A pizza from Durbin's? Flowers from Chalet Florist?

The possibilities are endless.

Post your 'thank you' messages to Palos-area store owners and practitioners below. They deserve it.

Without a doubt Pop's! Great food, amazing value. There is always tons of people there, yet you get your food faster than if you were at major fast food places. Plus, Pop's gives back a lot to the community. Another gem is Sam Buca's. Their pasta fagioli is the best around. Salmon Augustine is another fantastic dish. Mmmmm, they mix good drinks, too. My lovely bridge digs the Cosmos. Dominick's is, for some reason, one of my kids' favorite places to go (to shop with me). A lot of products and prices are better than Jewel. New Wilmer Liquors has a ton of specialty beers, wines, and spirits. For a mom-and-pop liquor store, the prices aren't bad at all. The owner is a really nice guy. Please support this place!!!! Finally, Breadsmith bread is the bomb. Yum!

Forgot a couple: Ace Hardware is full of friendly and smart people willing to help you. My son flushed a toothbrush down the toilet, and Ace was there to help! Also, we put in closet organizers with screws that were too long. We had to repair the wall in the next room-- Ace was there with a smile and a nod and laugh of been-there-done-that. They walked me right through how to fix it! Joe Daniel's! We don't get there as often as I'd like, but we frequently carry out. Their Mexican (taco) pizza is the best around. Ask for jalapenos on the side if you're a pasty Irish guy (like me) sensitive to the hot stuff! Celtic Cottage is where I buy my beautiful Irish bride her jewelry. Whether you want something basic, or something out-of-this-world, the owner is willing to work with you (and your wallet). Plus, buy some frozen brown bread!

Alright, one last post!!!!!! We use Pat Duggins (Allstate) and John Skourlis (American Family Insurance) for our various property/auto insurance policies. You don't get jerked around with these guys-- they shoot straight.
