Power Line Catches Fire Near 123rd and 88th

No one was injured when a power line started arcing near the 123rd Street and 88th Avenue intersection in Palos Park Monday night, after a severe storm with high winds blew through the area. Elsewhere in Palos, over 2,600 residences lost power.

A power line arced and caught fire in Palos Park Monday night after a severe storm, leading to 123rd Street closing between 88th Avenue and 86th Avenue.

Alerts went out about the dangerous power line around 6 p.m. after a storm with heavy winds moved east through the Palos area. The line caught fire as it arced, but did not cause other damage, according to Palos Fire Captain Jim Graben.

“We are keeping the road closed between 88th and 86th because it is still arcing regularly,” Graben said around 8:30 p.m. “It is still a live wire so we are keeping that area clear.”

Low power lines also led to authorities closing Route 83 west of Southwest Highway, according to Palos Park Police Chief Joe Miller.

In Palos Park, eight trees fell throughout the village, along with scattered power outages, Miller said.
