About Town: Art Appreciation, Classes Available at McCord Gallery and Cultural Center

Events, classes and plain-old appreciation of the arts takes place at this area institution.

Editor's Note: Palos Patch will be profiling prominent places in town that are unique to our area.

When a gallery and cultural center is located in a Civil-War era house, it must be difficult to not feel inspired by the history of the place.

Serving as both a learning center for the arts and cultural history, the McCord Gallery and Cultural Center is located in the McCord House. After the 2004 efforts of both local officials and community groups led to preserving the structure as a location to appreciate art, the non-profit now holds classes and displays artwork.

The gallery's artwork is displayed by the work of students taking classes at the MGCC, according to resources. Classes, which are open to students of all skill levels, include painting, water color, drawing, comic-making, oil painting, still life, pastels and fused glass, among others. Art classes are available for both children and adults, according to the MGCC website.

In addition to its art classes, the MGCC also offers private music instruction, private children's watercolor instruction and semi-private instruction for adults and children.

While the displayed artwork does include that of its students, the MGCC does also display art by local artists. Additionally, it accepts proposals for exhibitions and holds special events and exhibits throughout the year. Upcoming exhibits include artwork by Sandburg High School students, as well as a watercolor show by a local artist.

The MGCC offers memberships for $35 per person and $50 per family. Memberships include invitations to previews and receptions; brochures and newsletters; discounts on purchases from the Gallery & Shoppe; art class and music class discounts; and more.

Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Fridays; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

The McCord Gallery and Cultural Center, a non-profit organization, is located at 9602 W. Creek Rd., Palos Park. For more information, visit its website or call (708) 671-0648.
