Smith Senior Living Built on 9 Decades Residents and VIPs Join in 90th Anniversary Celebration

Residents and dignitaries joined the festivities at Smith Village, 2320 113th Place in Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood, to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the day the first residents moved into the very first retirement community which has grown to become Smith Senior Living. Smith now sponsors two not-for-profit continuing care retirement communities including Smith Village and Smith Crossing in Orland Park.

Remarks by Cook County Commissioner John Daley and 19th Ward Alderman Matt O’Shea praised Smith’s presence in the community. The evening also included a performance by the Smith Chorale featuring Smith Village residents.

May 1, 1924 marked the opening of Oakhaven Old People’s Home on what is now the site of Smith Village in Chicago. In 1917, Oakhaven was chartered by the State of Illinois thanks to the generous involvement of Illinois notables including Jane Addams, Governor Charles Deneen, Senator Joseph McCormick, John G. Shedd and the legendary attorney Clarence Darrow. In 1929, the community was renamed Washington and Jane Smith Home after receiving $1.75 million from the estate of Emilie Smith. Over the last 90 years, Smith Senior Living communities have served as home to nearly 3,000 adults.
