Music Connection Piano Camp Offered Lessons in Creativity, Connection, Fun, And Piano!

Late July was the best time for some of the piano students at The Music Connection.

"These seven students are all intermediate piano students and were looking for some new adventures in music this summer," said Janet Kuester, director of The Music Connection.

"We were so fortunate to have a wonderful summer intern, Allison Anderson, who developed this summer camp's curriculum."

Allison Anderson, Orland Park, has completed her music education degree from Bob Jones University. She will be returning to complete her masters in piano performance.

"I had so much fun teaching the children," she said. "Mrs. Kuester offered a few suggestions, but I was able to create the class."  Allison continued, "The children also had their own agenda.  All of them were very eager to try composing."

The class covered time tests for fast note recognition, music history and composers, improvisation using the blues scale, and composition.

"One of Allison's fun ideas was ‘Christmas in July’.”  Kuester said, "All of the children prepared a holiday song. Since most of the tunes were recognizable, they learned them quickly enough to play in the Friday recital."

Students "polished" pieces included everything from the classical "Eccosaise", to "Pink Panther."

Compositions had original titles like "Scale Symphony" by Isabella Markel of Orland Park and "A Short Drizzle" by Mitchell Dallstrom, Frankfort.

The grand finale of the class was an arrangement of "Up on the Housetop" for 7 students and two teachers.

Participating students were Aidyn O'Heir, Joe O'Heir; Palos Park; Derek Milosovic, Mitchell Dahlstrom, Frankfort; Addison Fitzgerald, Oak Forest; Lisa Snyder, Homer Glen; and Isabella Markel, Orland Park.
