The idyllic surroundings of Lake Katherine provide a natural oasis for many Palos area residents. A walking trail stretches around the entire lake and is used by many. Benches dot the trail for those looking to stop and reflect. Several botanic gardens featuring a variety of flowers and other plant life are must-see spots for children and adults alike. A small waterfall and wooden platform are frequent backdrops for  wedding photos of area couples.

The nature center also offers a variety of youth programs aimed to spur interest in environmental and preservation issues. Various field trip programs are also offered to area schools. Lake Katherine Nature Center is currently operated as a non-profit charitable organization.
