World War II Brought to Life at Palos South
Palos South School held a demonstration to educate students about Pearl Harbor and World War II
Submitted by District 118
World War II was brought to life for eighth graders through living history demonstrations Monday at Palos South School.
Having recently begun their World War II unit in social studies, students supplemented their knowledge by viewing artifacts and witnessing demonstrations from “Don’t Know Much About History” group and members of the World War II Historical Society.
Students learned about the Pacific and European theatres, major battles, and womens’ roles in the war. Palos South student Kelsey Weivoda said she was able to experience the era in a more meaningful way through the presentation.
“They gave more precise details than our books about World War II,” she said.
The Palos 118 Parent Faculty Association sponsors the in-school learning experience. Next semester, the PFA will bring Civil War Days to seventh graders at South.

Aunt Catherine.
I wonder if the 118 school kids know one of their teachers left
The classroom for the Navy during WW ll. This story would not
Be unique except for the fact the sailor was my aunt Catherine
Busch McMahon. Palos born and bred she was a graduate of 118.
Aunt Catherine served as a yeoman and went to the South Pacific.

I have to admit I wish my school did something like this when I was in this grade. My grandfather served in the Big Red I, but passed before I was born. The closest that I can come to seeing this and experiencing is by talking to veterans, but also by playing video games like Battlefield Academy
