Papa John's Obamacare Stance Spurs Protests
The Palos Heights Papa John's location isn't too concerned about a price increase tossed out by the company's CEO.
What do chicken sandwiches and pizza have in common? Politics, apparently.
Hoping to replicate the success of Chick-fil-A after it was boycotted over gay rights, conservatives are staging a pro-pizza day to counter protests against Papa John's Obamacare stance.
Papa John owner John Schnatter's recently announced that he would raise prices to cover costs he says are associated with the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.
In Palos Heights, one manager of the Papa John's hasn't heard any feedback from customers about the proposed price jimp and doesn't think any price changes will have a big affect on sales.
“It sholdn’t be anything super bad from what I’ve heard but we’re hoping that nothing changes as far as our costumers are concerned," said R.J. Eecott.

As liberals began organizing boycotts of the pizza chain, Papa John's supporters created a Facebook page to promote National Papa John's Appreciation Day on Friday.
"Papa Johns has been targeted by the left for a boycott, for simply articulating that ObamaCare would hurt profits and force cutbacks in employee hours," the Facebook page says. "Stand up to this nonsensical and illogical action and support Papa John's this Friday."
The pro-Papa event is reminiscent of Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day, which saw droves of people nationwide patronize the fast-food chain after its CEO came under fire for criticizing gay marriage.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the pepperoni fence, anti-Papa forces have urged people to switch to local pizza joints this week. "Papa John's owner has decided to combat the Affordable Healthcare Act by increasing his prices, threatening terminations and lowering employee hours - simply to avoid and protest employee health benefits," said one pro-boycott invitation.
A story at Forbes.com says Papa John's will see a 0.4 to 0.7 percent increase in healthcare costs for employees working 30 or more hours a week under the new law. The company CEO also said he expects to cut employee hours to offset the cost.

Seriously this is what it comes down too? Stupid liberals you aren't hurting the corporation but the indi vidual franchisee. If you continue to boycott large corporations eventually you will have no one left to fund your welfare. Get a clue, then get a job!

You think Papa John's offers it's employees healthcare without Obamacare? Nope. Their model is based upon lots of people working fewer than 40 hours a week. They can work nearly full time at minimum wage without benefits, so they have a job. What they don't have is healthcare.

Boycott Apple. Boycott Ford. Hell, just boycott every company that has anything that looks remotely like success. Maybe we can bring 'em down and kill all those people's jobs. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Who needs to boycott? Unions are kiling these companies. Just ask Hostess, which filed for bankruptcy this morning.

The people who will benefit most from universal healthcare are small businesses, contract employees, part-time employees and others who don't have an option to receive healthcare at work. It will also benefit those who are uninsurable. And, you'd be surprised how easy it is to be uninsurable if you are not part of a large company healthcare plan. Don't believe me? Pretend you don't have insurance and try to get some as an individual.
These business owners increasing prices to cover healthcare are making a political statement. It is not based in the reality of the situation, nor do they care about the reality. They are mad and have a platform to express their anger. No one would care if this was an individual pizza parlor. Since he's speaks for a national chain everyone is covering the story.

The US will became a nation of part time workers in the service industry. Thanks Liberals. Thanks for voting for Obama and I hope you all get the free bees he promised you. Pathetic! I have to go to work now so my taxes can fund the Link Card, Section 8 Housing, free cell phones and all the babies about to be born here in Il, I hope there is enough in my check left over so I can make my Blue Cross Blue Sheild family health care payment this month! It is hard being responsible for so many people I have never met.. I guess that means we are all one happy family. Gee it sounds easier to just sit at home and depend on all the hard working peeps in this state. Disgusting!!

Mom Too
As the mother of an autistic adult daughter, I appreciate the portion of your tax dollars that help support the programs that provide me with a very small sense that just maybe she won't starve to death when I am gone. But as more and more programs are cut that help the disabled (she just recently lost her job in the sheltered workshop program due to funding cuts) it becomes very clear that the world may not be inclined to give one red cent to help those that are less fortunate sometime in the future. So like you, I hope that after I pay for our BCBS premiums, that I will be able to en mass the hundreds of thousands of dollars (and climbing if the tea party folks ever take over) that is the projected need to support someone like my daughter when I am gone. You should be happy you never walked in my shoes or you may be singing a different, more compassionate song.

I don't think any of us believe that all programs should be cut. But working people are tired of working and paying taxes to support people that "won't" work for a living - that have found a way to live off of the system. I totally understand and agree that certain programs are needed for those that are trying or for those that can't help themselves such as Mary Beth's daughter. What we are sick of is paying for the illegals that are in the United States having children so that their children are now legal US citizens, giving them "in-state tuition rates" when they are not even here legally! Not to mention the women and families that are living off of welfare and having children - that they KNOW that they can't support. Being in line in the grocery store behind someone using their "food stamps" that then pays for their cigarettes and beer with their cash.
Where did this class of person come from that doesn't take pride in working for a living? Because they have taught their offspring to do the same thing and we keep supporting them with programs and more programs. Unfortunately for Mary Beth the programs that are needed for her daughter are being cut because we need the money to support people that are too lazy to work!

I don't disagree that people should get off of their ass, and that welfare needs reform in a big way. But unless you are a business owner, your share of taxes is a drop in the bucket compared to what corporations and other entities contribute to the welfare system as a whole.
All PapaJohns needs to do is raise his prices by something like .4% to .7% to cover the increased costs of mandated healthcare without changing a thing (according to Forbes.com, take that source for what you will) - am I going to sweat having a Pizza raise in price from $20.00 to $20.08 - $20.14 per pie? No.
Suppose I got the decimals wrong (4% - 7%). And he had to raise the prices from $20 to $22-$23.50 to cover the gap. Am I going to run screaming? No. I'd still eat his pizza if I thought it was good.
Corporations have to live with the new reality. And congratulations on Papa John's for doing a Chick-Fila and turning politics into a promotional opportunity. Even if I disagree with the political statement, I recognize the savvy in the decision. But in the end, the cost of doing business is dealing with the factors out there. Mandatory healthcare just became one of them. If you can't adapt, then according to most conservative fiscal pundits you deserve to go out of business.
Don't assume we're a nation of lazy dumbasses when we're among the smartest people on the planet. If we can split the atom, I'm sure someone will find a way to keep pizza moving even under Obamacare.

I urge people to boycott Papa Johns. He can afford to pay Payton Manning a large salary for his commerical and then give away 2 milltion pizza's, but he can't afford to give his employees health care. Who does he thinks buys his pizza's. Certainly not the super rich. It's the common working family. So Papa John, cut your own throat!

Honestly, does anyone really have a clue what the Affordable Healthcare Act is? The whole purpose is so that Americans have an opportunity to actually afford healthcare if they own their own business or want to start their own business, work somewhere that doesn't offer insurance, or lose their job and their insurance along with it. This isn't free healthcare. This isn't welfare. It's AFFORDABLE healthcare. Comments like 'get a job' basically tells me that most don't even know what the bill is. With the absolutely skyrocketing costs of health insurance these days, it will come as a God-send to millions of people. God forbid Papa John himself bites the bullet if the .7% increase from his own multi-million dollar salary. Better to take it from the minimum wage earning employees.

I work in this field and I can promise you this is NOT affordable healthcare. It will help a small percentage of people. For most it will become more unaffordable. For the low income if the healthcare reform is not funded they will definitely not be able to afford it (of course if they due fund it the national debt will rise by trillions.)

By the way, John Schnatter's net worth is $240 million. And as a side note, he gave quite a bit of that away to the Romney campaign. Apparently he can throw money away on politics, but not employee wages.

We lilve in a democracy. Everyone had the opportunity to cast a ballot for the person, or persons he or she wanted to lead the country. The democrats prevailed. It is useless to talk about your fellow citizens, YOUR president, and others just because your candidate lost. Even more so, I dare any of you to talk in public the way you do in this blog. You wouldn't. So stop the nasty talking points and prepare how you are going to deal with your life and the lives of your loved ones until the next election. And, remember, if you believe in God, then you know that He knows who your leaders are, and He is allowing them to serve. Trust God, and don't worry about Obama. That is the lesson we all need to learn.

Yea Christy LYonn... I hope Obama hires you to find all of these people you are talking about.. And let me know which programs you are in favor of cutting and which ones you are not? I mean obviously "we" don't want to screw over that autistic kid... That would be un-christian like... But I do want to find those free loading illegal baby makers.
I can't wait til Saint Peter opens his books and sees those bastards that took advantage of in-state-tuition... I mean the nerve of them to get an an education, find a good job and not go on gov't welfare... Now that would be an awkward conversation.
