Storefronts along Harlem Avenue were bustling with shoppers Thursday night as the city celebrated the first "Home for the Holidays" shopping event.

A trolley, complete with Mrs. Claus and elves, drove shoppers to over a dozen participating retailers. Each store had food, drinks and specials awaiting the shoppers. Carolers from Sandburg High School outfitted in Dickensian garb added to the festive feel.

The event was spearheaded by Eileen Reckinger of Chesterfield Designs. The effort was designed not only to attract holiday shoppers, but to introduce locals to businesses they might normally not stop in.

"I am trying to go in as many stores as I can," said Shannon Beverley, who was riding the trolley with her three children. "I always try to shop local when I can."

Lorie Stone, owner of the Celtic Cottage, says that things have gotten tougher for store owners in recent years and events like this are much needed.

At the local antique shop, Shirley's Place, the store has been given a decidedly Christmas vibe. The eclectic shop is outfitted for the holidays with a nod toward their appreciation of the past.

"It is fun to decorate and to have new people come and and browse around," said Suzee Koestner, one of the shop's dealers.

While the event drew new customers through the door, all the participants hope the interest in local shopping will continue all year.
