Palos Hills Pushes for GMO Labels on Food

The City Council is urging the state legislature to add mandatory labels on genetically-modified food, according to a report.

Ald. Joe Marrotta made the original motion for the measure, according to the report. Residents should know if the modified items are in their food, Marrotta said. The rest of the council members who attended the November meeting all voted unanimously in support of the call, citing a need for "truth in labeling."

Triblocal reports:

More than half the food in grocery stores has been prepared through 'genetic modification,' according to a Mayo Clinic Women's Health Source newsletter last year. Critics, including the Washington nonprofit Food and Water Watch, say the crops 'could pose risks to conventional agriculture, the environment and human health.'

California voters shot down an initiative in the most recent election that would have added labeling to food products containing GMOs.
