Maurice Perteete was among the more than 100 people on Tuesday who had expected the last boxes of Hostess Twinkies to grace the aisles of the Palos Heights Jewel-Osco.

When the announcement came that the shipment was delayed until the following day, he and the many others—some who waited up to five hours—left disappointed that they had missed their chance at the store-bought confection. Hostess liquidated its assets after a bankruptcy judge gave his approval and has said it will stop making its iconic brands.

Hoping beyond hope, the 42-year-old Alsip contractor returned to the Palos Heights store on Wednesday for a chance at one of the remaining one. Walking by the metal cart and undecorated cardboard packaging containing the Twinkies, Perteete spotted and grabbed the final two, unopened Twinkies boxes.

Just as he did, Joan Veugeler of Palos Heights walked up to the same make-shift stand, looking for Twinkies, and asked about the two remaining boxes.

"Are those the last ones?" she asked.

Perteete, with hardly any hesitation, replied that they were and handed one over to Veugeler.

"I'm blessed to get one," Perteete tells Palos Patch.
