Man Arrested for DUI Threatened to Hurt Kids at School: Police

A Palos Hills man referenced the Connecticut shooting massacre while in custody Monday, police said. Officers have removed guns and ammo from his home.

A Palos Hills man faces charges after telling police he was going to hurt children and referencing the Connecticut elementary school shooting.

Michael L. Lynch, 31, was arrested at around 2:30 a.m. Monday in the 8800 block of 107th Street. He is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and disorderly conduct.

While in custody, Lynch told officers he was going to harm children at a school and would return to the police station to shoot people, Palos Hills police said. He also made references to hurting himself and to the tragedy at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school where 27 people died, including 20 children, six adults and the gunman.

Officers seized firearms and ammunition from Lynch’s home “for safe keeping,” police said.

Police said Lynch was intoxicated when he made these comments. The disorderly conduct charge stems from the statements about harming himself and other people. Lynch was hospitalized after his arrest.

I hope he is still locked up and undergoing a psych eval. Drunk or not those comments indicate serious issues that make him a danger to all.

I don't know if a specific school was mentioned. I'll be checking with police in the morning for a follow-up story.

Please tell me he is still contained and being held for psychiatric evaluation??? He needs to be locked up because drunk is no excuse for comments like that so there must be other serious issues.

I can confirm this. Schools in the area were already on soft lockdown because of what happened in Tinley Park. D117 also was told about these alleged threats, too.

And they allow this guy a firearm with ammo......You need to take his FOID card, guns and ammo away for good.

If the schools were notified of his intentions, then WHY was outside recess allowed? That is definitely not right. I thought the Connecticut massacre would have raised a few more eyebrows. Apparently not .... I will pray for all involved and that this jerk was just nothing more than full of "hot air" spewing at the mouth because he was caught doing something utterly stupid!

It's guys like him that give us responsible gun owners a bad name. The police report says they took his weapons for safe keeping. OK? Now what?...Give them back when he sobers up? I say take them, keep them and obsolete his FOID card. These people need to take responsibility for their actions.

What about his 2nd amendment? Be careful, people might put words in your mouth, say you hate the constituition and tell you to move to Canada.

How is this not a hate crime? Kids are a specific population, not unlike any religious, ethnic, racial or other group. This cannot be tolerated.

Also there is always a heavy police presence around the NPD117 schools in Palos Hills. It has been that way since our girls started at NPD117.

I sincerely believe that the first line of defense in any situation like this is the teachers. The police do what they can, but when things get crazy, it's the teachers and faculty that bear the burden of protecting our kids. That's why I think all teachers that want it should have the option to go through rigorous firearms training, and carry side-arms. They would be akin to air marshals on flights. It's hard to shoot someone when you're dead.

This is really starting to get scarry. Im wondering if this man will be monitered even after he is released from the hospital after 72 hours . I am wondering if the patch has heard about the man that stormed into St. Alexander last year during school hours . It was during thursday morning 8:30 mass. The whole junior high was present including one of my children. The man stormed to the front of the church told everyone that they where evil and that they would all where gonna die. He then ran out and was later arrested. My daughter was terrifed that day and said that it happened so fast . The where just starting to get down in the pues when he suddenly left. It really hit home when last week's horrible events took place and my 7th grader had come to relize how lucky they where last year that no one was hurt.

They will release him, watch him for a week or two, give him back his guns. Then if he goes through with his comments....Everyone will blame the gun owners.....

Simple solution to these morons that threaten our schools........Hire an off duty Police officer with weapon(they all need extra cash). Pay him $40k year, All visitors 1 way in 1 way out, 200 thousand grammer schools in the country =200 thousand jobs=tax money for goverment, income for cop, safe children.....win win for all

I'm having a hard time understanding what people honestly think could have been done to stop the tragedy in CT.
The guns were all legally purchased...the school only had one door access - he shot out a different door to get in...

Having teachers carry guns is insane and unrealistic. It takes a tragedy to step up security until Jan 8th and then everything will be back to normal. There hasn't been a rash of school shootings. One psycho in one small town across the country doesn't mean we need to spend a ton of money having armed security patrol the halls.
Also , there's enough Palos officers on payroll that they can rotate turns sitting outside the school if that'll help parents feel better.
