In the Fast Lane: Where Are Speeders Out of Control in Palos?
"Slow down. See what you're missing." These are words of advice from one Palos Patch reader to area speeders.
We've all been guilty of it at one time or another. You're traveling down a road you've been on a thousand times before and your foot gets a little heavy on the gas pedal.
Or you're late for work and figure keeping pace with traffic is OK, even if it is 10 mph over the limit.
It happens. But people notice when it becomes a problem.
A letter recently sent to the City of Palos Heights from residents outlined a few concerns about 123rd Street near Ridgeland Avenue. An uptick in the number of speeders combined with an increase in young children playing nearby has people worried.
One Palos Heights committee discussed installing a "Slow, Children at Play" sign and dragging the trailer with a radar system that tells you how fast you're traveling into the area.
Where else around here should authorities also be mindful of fast drivers? We turned this question over to Facebook readers. Here are some of the responses we received:
Tim Moore: People speed like demons almost everywhere, but I think there are some places where it is worse than others. People often come screaming along on 127th/McCarthy near Palos East, especially when they are heading east and come around that bend just before 76th Avenue. A good friend was seriously injured in a bad accident at that intersection not too long ago.
Heather M Moore: Southwest highway...Cutz&Color strip....it's VERY DANGEROUS
Bobby Master: I live on 111th near Kean ave. ....no way in hell are these people doing 45 mph... even the frickin' Pace bus is flying!!!
Pamela Bednarz: 131st street and 76th ave. I live a few houses from the stop light on 76th Ave. People speed there all the time go through the red light. I have seen this so many times. I was on my way to the bike path riding near the curb on the north side of the street and was almost hit on two separate occasion by on coming cars that were going to fast. Not to mention the flying gulf balls from Oak Hills that have hit these fast driving cars on 131st street. There is going to be a major accident one day when someone looses control! Something needs to be done with this safety issue!
Renee Szpak Chavez: OAK PARK AVE for sure !!! from 125th to route 83 !!!
Inga Balzaras-Rzeszutko: In my opinion neither the speed detectors nor cameras really deter people. The only thing to slow drivers down are the blue flashing lights of a squad car. Everyone seems to be in a hurry these days. God forbid they leave a few minutes earlier to get where they're going. They are also easily distracted with their phones, kids, radios etc., they are not paying attention to the road. Defensive driving does not equal aggressive driving. Slow down!!!! See what you're missing!!!
