[Bridgeview, IL]  This week Northwestern College’s Bridgeview Campus hosted a half-day seminar on taxes and healthcare for members of the Chicago Family Business Council (CFBC), an affiliate of the DePaul University Driehaus College of Business. Nearly 50 of Chicago’s family business owners and leaders congregated at this campus for the presentation, “Taking Charge of Your Multistate Taxes & ABCs of the Affordable Care Act,” featuring experts on both subjects.  Northwestern College is a 110 year old family-owned business of the Chicagoland area which has been owned by the Schumacher Family since 1956; the Schumachers have been members of the CFBC since approximately 1998. 

The first portion of the CFBC Program was designed to educate business owners on multistate taxes and the power of states to subject businesses to taxation.  It was presented by Richard Lieberman, a Partner at Burke, Warren, MacKay & Serritella, P.C., and Karen Snodgrass, a Partner at Cray Kaiser Ltd.; they covered topics such as income and sales tax exposure in various states, as well as new developments in the area of multistate taxation.

The second presentation was by Marcus Newman, Vice President of GCG Financial. Newman covered a myriad of issues pertaining to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), including actionable information for companies to use to chart their course for implementation of the ACA law. As most of its provisions will be in full effect beginning January 14, 2014, Newman discussed compliance as well as two different applicable tax penalties for failure to comply.
