Northwestern College Features Alcohol-Awareness Program with “Drunkbuster” Goggles Simulating .08 BAC
[Bridgeview, IL] Earlier this month Northwestern College featured a program entitled “Alcohol Myth Busters” in order to bring awareness about alcohol, drugs and impairment. The program was presented by the Office of Counseling and Disability Services and provided students with an opportunity to test their knowledge of the truths about sobriety, myths, and statistics about alcohol use. In addition, they were tested on related issues including DUIs and sexual assault. As part of the program, students at the Bridgeview Campus were able to put on special “Drunkbuster” Goggles that enabled them to see things as if they were at a blood alcohol level (BAC) of .08, the level in Illinois whereby a person is legally drunk. While wearing the goggles, students walked an obstacle course or performed tests that an officer might have them take if they were pulled over on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Additionally, during the program students were served mocktails (beverages without alcohol) and were provided with handouts on a variety of alcohol-related issues (DUI, Sexual Assault, etc.). Students were also able to participate in an Alcohol Myth quiz yielding prizes to winners at each campus.
“It is important for students to understand the affects that alcohol can have on them,” commented Lawrence Schumacher, President of Northwestern College. “We hope this program not only opened our students’ eyes to the real effects of alcohol, but helped to clear up some of the myths and misconceptions that many of us have, for these misconceptions can lead to tragic consequences.”
